Star-Spangled Jesus by April Ajoy is the story of April’s own journey of separating her far right Christian nationalist beliefs from her faith in Jesus and embracing a life of faith inclusive of all. This book will challenge readers to examine the entanglement of faith and conservative politics in thoughtful, disarming, and sometimes humorous ways. One of my favorite things about this book is April’s vulnerability in sharing her raw thoughts and motivations throughout her life. April approaches this volatile issue by sharing her own story, good, bad, and ugly, of what she believed, why she believed it, and what led her to where she is now. I found many parts to be an uncanny parallel to my own political transformation over the last few years; as if I could have written the words myself. I highly recommend this fantastic read to people who are wrestling with their own confusion over what it means to be both an American and a follower of Christ.
